Layers of Soil

Instead of Halloween treats this year, we celebrated soil by eating our delicious stone soup.  Thank you to everyone for contributing and participating!

We also reviewed the 3 layers of soil with a food craft.

3 Layers of Soil

The bottom layer is bedrock - made with mini marshmallows to represent the large boulders that make up bedrock.

The middle layer of soil is subsoil - made with Cheerios to represent medium sized rocks with space for air and water between them.

The top layer of soil is topsoil - made with Rice Krispies to represent the smallest sized rocks, mixed with Smarties to represent the brown humus.

Again the soil was topped off with an earthworm - made with a gummy worm.

Yum!!!

Worms and Dirt

On Tuesday we looked more closely at the 3 kinds of soil by making a food treat.  If you wish to make them at home, the recipe is below.

Worms and Dirt

First, the chocolate pudding is the bottom layer as sticky clay.

Next comes crushed graham wafers as gritty sand.

Then is oreo cookie crumbs as fine silt.

Last, top it off with a gummy worm as an earthworm to keep the soil aerated and consume the organic waste.

Enjoy!
